Hi there! This is my first submission to Fanartica, and I’d like to take a second to announce that I’m way excited to take part in the fun. My older brother (Greg Marathas) has been involved for some time now, and I’m quite pleased to be posting alongside him. I’m an avid gamer, reader, and movie-lover, and am totally stoked to share those enthusiasms in this way. Way too cool…

“Cale, Akimaaaaaa”
I had very little trouble picking the subject for my first submission. I saw the theme and ran with it - non-Disney? Animated? Fun to illustrate? TITAN AE. This movie isn’t even just non-Disney; it’s practically ANTI-Disney. You want an impressive cast of relevant actors? Done. You want cartoon gunfights in areas of space where everyone, despite their profession, seems to be packing a clunky alien death-ray weapon? You got it! You want character design punctuated fiercely by cargo pants and utility belts that reflects somewhat perfectly an awkward-yet-amazing period in our culture’s history? DONE.
Again, really glad to share my work with you. Hope you enjoy this and hope you’re now fighting the urge to bust out a copy of this cool timepiece - thanks for looking!

J.J. Abrams and Non-Disney Animation

It’s May here at Fanartica, and that means it’s that special time of year when people finally emerge from their homes after a long winter and head straight to the movie theater! Over the past few years, J.J. Abrams has established himself as one of the heralds of summer. So now, we pay homage to all things mysterious, from Lost to Alias, from Star Trek to Super 8, from Cloverfield to…AAAAAAKK!! LENS FLARES!!!

In addition, we’ll also be delving into the canon of non-Disney/Pixar animation. So dig deep for those Don Bluth treasures hidden at the back of the VHS drawer you had as a child. Bring back the memories of Rankin/Bass, and revel in the new adventures from Dreamworks and Blue Sky.

And always remember: There are no cats in America.

Ursula the sea witch & Divine, the star of many John Waters films are not only two of my favorites, but they’re the same person! Well, Ursula is based off of Divine.

Sad News: Boston Comic Con Cancelled

Due to the distressing events in Boston, Boston Comic Con has been cancelled until further notice. Fanartica has worked very hard to prepare for the con so we’re hugely disappointed, but we also understand the necessity to cancel.

Fanartica was founded in Boston and the majority of our members live there. I just want to say that I love my city, we love our city. And we’re so going to BRING IT when BCC is rescheduled!

Hey everyone! We’re very excited to say that Fanartica will be at Boston Comic Con** this weekend, April 20-21, 2013.

We also can’t wait to share with you a little project we’ve been working on. We’ve gathered up some of our favorite Fanartica pieces (as well as some new pieces we’ve never posted before) and printed out a beautiful full color book*.

So swing by table AA707 in Artist Alley and say hello. Not only will many of our artists have prints and books available but we just plain like meeting new people.

What an epic bathtub battle!! I’m super excited to participate in Fanartica! This is my first submission, and I knew immediately I wanted to do an illustration in honor of my favorite man-children :) - Kacey
Francis: Remember the first time I saw your bike? You came riding past my house and I came running out to tell you how much I liked it even way back then?
Pee-wee: I love that story.

Whenever I’m home sick, I rock out to two movies and two movies only: Escape from New York, and Roadhouse. It’s the movie that’s nice…until it’s time to not be nice. - Greg M.

VILLAINS & CULT CLASSICS

WOW!!!! 1 MILLION FOLLOWERS!!!!! Haha, no, just APRIL FOOLS :p

A while back we explored “Misunderstood” Villains, but this time I want to give the guys and gals that openly dedicate themselves to badness a spotlight.

April showers might keep you inside a lot this month, so it’s a perfect time to rewatch all your favorite cult classics. Brush off the “Freaks & Geeks” box set, pop in the original “Evil Dead” VHS, or take a day trip to Baltimore to get reference photos for a John Waters illustration (and remember to draw a Natty Boh, that beer has a cult following).
